Dear Parents and Carers
Thank you for the good attendance of our ‘Gingerbread Man’ performance, it was lovely to see you all. It was also lovely to see the children really enjoying performing for you, we were delighted with them and what they achieved. Talking in front of a hall full of adults is quite a frightening thing!
Your child will be taking part in the Year One Phonics Screening Test during the week beginning 15th June. We are very pleased with the children and their phonics ability, they have worked very hard to develop their reading skills and we are very proud of each of them.
During the weeks leading up to the Screening Test there will be no Spellings, Mental Maths or Learning Log. If you would like to help your child to prepare for the Screening Test, we have created a group within ‘Homework’ on Education City called ‘Phonics Activities’. Within this group there are activities which will help your child to practise their skill of blending which is needed for the Screening Test. This homework is optional, we practise blending skills in class at all times, so please don’t worry if you are unable to complete the activities.
During the Screening Test, the children will be reading alien words or nonsense words. To practise these words you can play the following games on Phonics Play (http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/Phase5Menu.htm):
Buried Treasure
Dragon’s Den
Picnic on Pluto
Just to remind you, when looking at a word, the child needs to think about which letters they would say together before trying to sound the word out. For Example: In the word train, the child needs to recognise that we say ‘ai’ together to make a new sound, not ‘a’ and then ‘i’.
If you are having any problems or issues with using ‘Education City’ or are worried about the Screening Test, please do not hesitate to see a member of the Year One Team.
Thanks for your continuing support, it is much appreciated!
